I started online counselling back in 2020 when COVID hit. As I wrote back then, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it went. So much so that four years and more than 4000 sessions later, I still work fully online and have no plans to change! During this time I’ve come to realize more clearly the many advantages of online counselling, some of which may apply especially to men.
Online counselling saves you times and money. There’s no travel time involved, no gas, no parking fees, no lost revenue from extra time away from work. All you need is an hour and an internet connection. This has been really important for my clients, who often lead busy lives, whether it’s at work or with their families, or both.
So long as you’re based in British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, or Saskatchewan your choice of counsellor is not limited by geography. If you’re interested in the specialized services I offer, and think we’d be a good fit, then chances are we can make it happen.
You get to choose your own environment. You can connect with me from the comfort and privacy of your own home or office. You can go sit in your (parked!) car if you prefer, or on a bench in the park, or you can walk while you talk.
You can connect from anywhere there’s a good internet connection. Business trips or travel don’t have to disrupt our meetings. Nor do sickness or restrictions on your mobility.
If you live or work in a small or remote community, you can access counselling that might not be available locally. I’ve connected with men in remote work camps, and even a couple working at sea.
Online counselling works really well. I know that’s true from the benefits my clients tell me about; and there’s also plenty of research out there to back it up. Most of the things I used to do in a face-to-face session are just as effective online … not only talk, but also breath and movement which are so important in dealing with trauma, anxiety and depression. The relationship between me and my clients develops quite naturally online, and for many people, working in this way from their own home actually makes it easier to do deep and effective work.
These advantages apply to me too. Working online from my home office suits me personally very well, which means that I enjoy my work, have more time, energy and focus, and am able to consistently offer the very best service to my clients. So, it’s a win-win situation!
